France has only two points from three games in Group A1in the UEFA Nations League

VIENNA: Kylian Mbappe helped France earn a point against Australia in the group stage game of the UEFA Nations League.

Mbappe, who came on as a second-half substitute, finished well after the visitors equalised at 83 minutes with a fast break.

Andreas Weimann had earlier scored his first international goal at the age of 30, threatening an upset.

It could have been much worse as Weimann, who has 22 goals in the Championship this season, headed in a low cross just before halftime.

France has only two points from three games in Group A1.

Karim Benzema came close for France both before and after the half, but it took Mbappe’s entrance to ultimately shatter Ralf Rangnick’s Austrian resistance.

The Paris St-Germain striker teamed with RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku to equalise just as it appeared that their pressure would not be rewarded.

Patrick Pentz, the Austrian goalkeeper who also saved Matteo Guendouzi’s late header, denied Mbappe a winner.

France still has a long way to go to reach the Nations League finals next year, having blown two leads in five days, losing to Denmark and drawing with Croatia.

Croatia won their opening match of the season, 1-0, against group leaders Denmark.

Mario Pasalic’s goal broke the tie, bringing Croatia equal on points with Austria in second place, two points behind Denmark.
